Recently, The New Mechanism of Salience Evolution of Risk Issues in Mobile Communication, a monograph by Huang Qing, a tenured associate professor and doctoral supervisor at our college, was published by Zhejiang University Press.

Synopsis

In today's society, where high risks and mediatization intertwine, risk issues disseminated widely through mobile platforms have become highly salient, potentially triggering disordered online public opinion, excessive public anxiety, and even social panic.

This work proposes the user's action logic and platform's technological logic from a mediatization perspective. By examining three fundamental risk categorieshealth, technology, and the environmentit reveals a new mechanism for the salience evolution of risk issues in mobile communication: the platform amplification mechanism of risk. This aims to advance the governance of online public opinion, regulate public sentiment, and foster risk awareness.

Wu Fei, a Qiushi Distinguished Professor and doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang University, praised the monograph: By bridging theory and practice, Huang Qing not only delves into academic depth but also emphasizes the societal impact of communication research. The new mechanism uncovered in this book holds practical significance for the mediatized governance of risks under mobile communication conditions. Beyond its practical value, Huang Qing's risk research also demonstrates humanistic concern: First, it selects health, technology, and environmental risksthree fundamental categories critical to humanity's future survivaland examines Alzheimer's disease, artificial intelligence, and global warming as representative cases. Studying the formation and evolution of these issues helps cultivate awareness for preventing and mitigating major contemporary risks. Second, the new mechanism highlights that the platform's technological logic can only influence the salience evolution of risk issues when grounded in the user's action logic, underscoring the primacy of human agency over technology. Huang Qing's work offers fresh perspectives for academia and practical guidance for society, carrying substantial academic and social value.
